Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved prescription injectable that relaxes moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles. It treats dynamic wrinkles, which develop because of repetitive muscle activity over many years.

When you’re young, those muscle movements don’t cause any lasting changes in your appearance. However, as you age, your skin changes. You lose some of the natural substances, like collagen and elastin, that keep skin tight. Environmental damage takes its toll, too.

So when you frown, those two vertical lines that crop up between your eyebrows eventually remain, even when you’re not moving those muscles. Botox temporarily reduces the movement in those underlying muscles. This blurs away lines and wrinkles.

What are the treatment areas for Botox?

Botox is FDA-approved for the treatment of three areas in the face, including:

  • The lines between the eyebrows
  • The crow’s feet (lines around the corners of the eyes)
  • The long horizontal lines in the forehead

If you have wrinkles or deep folds in other parts of your face, they’re usually caused by loss of facial volume, not muscle movement. Dermal fillers are usually the best injectable for those areas.

What can I expect during my Botox treatment session?

The Brooklyn Aesthetics team makes Botox treatments a comfortable experience. First, the team asks about your treatment goals and performs a facial analysis.

They ask you to raise your brows, squint, and frown to determine how much Botox you need and exactly where to place it in your muscles.

The team may apply a cold pack to your face to prevent discomfort. If you’re especially sensitive, they can apply a topical numbing cream, too.

Most people feel only a few quick stings during Botox injections, but it’s not too different from a mosquito sting in terms of intensity. The injection process takes only around 10 minutes.

When do Botox results appear?

Botox can start working as soon as the next day. It takes effect gradually over the coming days, and you can see the maximum effect within a month. Everyone is different, but it can last as long as four months.

Can men get Botox injections?

Yes, and Botox is growing quite popular among men. In clinical studies, nearly 18% of patients who were treated for frown lines were men.
